Rules, context & practical reference
Enochian Chess, explained.
Enochian Chess combines a four-corner strategy game with symbolic divination. This single-file app includes Divination and Gaming modes, four elemental boards, Egyptian pieces, 16 openings, a journal, and deterministic session replay. The rules below describe this app’s implementation; settings and correspondences can vary by lineage.
How to play a session
- Create: choose New session and enter your question, mode, board, corners, and opening. Choose Ptah when required.
- Roll: press Roll Dice to record a result for the current turn. Manual rolling is the default; optional auto-roll is in Settings. Governance restricts the eligible piece class when enabled. A completed roll stays locked until the next turn; reroll is available only when no legal moves match and Settings allows it.
- Select: tap or click an eligible piece, then a highlighted destination.
- Commit: confirm the staged move. Continue clockwise and record observations in the journal.
- Preserve: save session JSON, export a board PNG or report, and use Replay to verify the record.
All six piece types
| Piece | Movement |
|---|---|
| King | One square in any direction, subject to check restrictions. No castling. |
| Queen | Configured Enochian ray: every third square counting from itself (2-step cadence), or multiples of three (3k cadence). The selected mode is stored with the session. |
| Bishop | Slides diagonally until blocked. |
| Knight | Standard chess L-shaped leap. |
| Rook / Castle | Slides along ranks and files until blocked. |
| Pawn | One forward step and diagonal-forward capture, with corner-dependent forward direction and opposite-edge promotion. No default double-step or en passant. |
Dice governance and the four corners
| Die | Eligible piece |
|---|---|
| 1 | King or any pawn, subject to active rules |
| 2 | Knight |
| 3 | Bishop |
| 4 | Queen |
| 5 | Rook / Castle |
| 6 | Pawn |
Water: northwest, blue. Air: northeast, yellow. Earth: southwest, black. Fire: southeast, red. Default clockwise order is Water → Air → Fire → Earth, rotated from the chosen prime corner.
Questions & answers
What is Enochian Chess?
Enochian Chess is a four-corner elemental strategy and divination game associated with the Golden Dawn tradition. This app uses an 8×8 board divided into Water, Air, Earth, and Fire lesser angles.
How do I begin a session?
Choose New session, enter a question, choose Divination or Gaming, select the board and corners, select one of 16 openings, and confirm the settings. In Divination with a Ptah objective, choose a valid Ptah square before starting.
How do I make a move?
Roll the die when governance requires it, select an eligible piece, choose a highlighted legal destination, then press Commit move. Selecting a destination stages the move; committing records it.
Can I save and verify a session?
Yes. Save downloads session JSON. Open loads a saved session. Replay tools verify the hash-chained event ledger and rebuild play. You can also export a PNG board image and a printable HTML report.
What does the Ptah marker do?
Ptah marks a target square without blocking movement. In this app’s Ptah victory mode, the querent king must occupy that square and hold it through a full clockwise cycle unchecked.
Does the app need an internet connection?
The game, manual, two figurine artwork sets, embedded soundtrack, and synthesized sound effects run locally from this HTML file. Optional automatic page translation connects to Google Translate and requires internet access. External reading links also require a connection.
Painted statuettes, sound, full screen, and languages
3D Statuettes: choose this piece style for colorfully painted, three-quarter-view Egyptian figurines on every army. Sculpted HD remains a second visual option. Both use embedded high-resolution artwork with contact shadows and animated moves.
Sound & music: enable Egyptian-inspired sound effects and the embedded “Mystical Egyptian Chess MIDI Soundtrack” recording independently. The supplied MP3 plays on a loop with gentle fades and its original audio intact. Adjust volume or turn either off at any time. Audio starts only after you enable it and pauses while the page is hidden.
Full screen board: use the board-header button to expand the table. Labeled golden spheres at the screen edges open and close the live Session, Ritual, View & audio, About, Oracle, Inspector, Log, and Guide panels over the board. Each panel slides in from its sphere’s edge. Click its sphere again, choose Close, or press Escape to collapse it. Roll, pass, commit, and exit controls stay available. Escape with no panel open restores the normal layout. Browsers without the Fullscreen API use an expanded in-page board view.
Languages: the language dropdown offers automatic Google translation, including a browser-language option. Online translation keeps the active game in this page. It requires an internet connection; the game and original English guide continue to work offline. Automatically translated terminology should be checked against the original English rules when precision matters.

History of Enochian (Rosicrucian) Chess — Origins, Purpose, Transmission, and Why It Matters
What it is. Enochian Chess (often called Rosicrucian Chess in Golden Dawn-era documents) is a four-corner elemental board operation that functions as both (a) a ritualized strategic game and (b) a constraint-driven oracle for divination and training. It is designed to keep the operator’s attention anchored to the elemental Watchtowers, the interlaced square systems, and the movement constraints imposed by the die.
Golden Dawn setting. The method is associated with the Second Order curriculum of the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn and later transmissions. The play uses an 8×8 board (the “Tablet”) partitioned into four 4×4 Lesser Angles. Each corner is treated as a seat/angle with its own king and retinue. Work proceeds deosil (clockwise) from a chosen prime corner.
Why the system works as divination. In Divination mode, you are not merely choosing a move; you are reading (1) the die-governed restriction, (2) the set of legal options within that restriction, and (3) the move you select as the “speech act” inside the constraint. The oracle is therefore built from permission vs denial (what can/cannot move), paths vs blocks, and timing (deosil turn cycle), not from “best play.”
Ptah marker in divination. Traditional divinatory play introduces a neutral marker called Ptah, placed on a chosen square within the querent’s Lesser Angle (not the king’s starting square). The querent’s task—assisted by the ally—is to bring the querent king onto Ptah and remain there through one full cycle, unchecked and undisturbed, as the resolution condition. This app implements Ptah exactly as a marker: it is not captured and it does not block movement; it designates the Ptah Square.
Piece forms and Egyptian god-forms. Traditional sets portray major pieces as Egyptian god-forms (e.g., Osiris/Isis/Horus families) and pawns as the four Sons of Horus (canopic-lid head forms). The purpose is not costume: it keeps the operator’s attention on archetypal agencies (sovereignty, initiative, mediation, doctrine, containment) while the elemental board constrains how those agencies may act.
Two interlaced square systems. Golden Dawn-era descriptions commonly describe two interwoven square systems (often named Aries/Cancer by analogy to alternating black/white squares). In this app, the default profile computes the system by parity (like a chessboard). System membership influences interpretive emphasis—e.g., which kinds of attacks are “strong” against a chosen Ptah Square.
Variations across lineages. In historical transmission, details can vary across lineages (openings, correspondences, and some interpretive assignments). This app therefore supports versioned profiles (BoardProfile/RulesetProfile/PlaySetting) so you can preserve your tradition’s exact mappings without rewriting the engine.
Boards, Lesser Angles, Turn Order (Deosil), and Alliances
Board partition. The 8×8 board is partitioned into four 4×4 Lesser Angles (quadrants). Each corner seat controls one Lesser Angle as its “home.” This app’s default quadrant map:
- Water (NW): files A–D, ranks 8–5
- Air (NE): files E–H, ranks 8–5
- Earth (SW): files A–D, ranks 4–1
- Fire (SE): files E–H, ranks 4–1
Turn order. Turns advance deosil from the Prime Corner chosen in the wizard. Default deosil order is Water → Air → Fire → Earth (rotated according to prime).
Alliances. A common arrangement pairs Water+Earth vs Air+Fire. In Divination mode, alliance dynamics are interpreted as supportive counter-currents or stabilizing/obstructing influences. In Gaming mode, alliances determine victory resolution if you use team play.
Pieces, Movement, and the Special Queen Ray
General selection. Select a piece to highlight legal targets. Click/tap a highlighted square to stage the move. Commit with Commit Selected Move (left panel) or Enter (optional shortcut). The game is deterministic; every action is written to the ledger.
Major Pieces
- King — 1 square any direction, subject to check rules. No castling.
- Knight — standard chess L-leap.
- Bishop — diagonal slide until blocked.
- Rook/Castle — orthogonal slide until blocked.
- Queen (Enochian ray) — third-square cadence: she may land only on every third square from her starting square in any direction, leaping over the intervening square; she does not threaten the intervening square. This app records the queen-ray mode at session start for deterministic replay.
Pawns (Four-Corner Chaturaji-Style)
Default forward directions are corner-based and can be overridden in PlaySetting:
- Water (NW): forward is down (toward decreasing rank numbers)
- Air (NE): forward is left (toward decreasing file)
- Earth (SW): forward is right (toward increasing file)
- Fire (SE): forward is up (toward increasing rank)
Pawn rules. One-step forward; diagonal-forward capture; no two-step by default; no en passant. Promotion occurs upon reaching the opposite edge relative to that pawn’s forward direction.
Thrones and Stacks
Corner thrones. Many openings place two pieces on the throne at initialization (commonly King + a designated companion). This app supports stacked occupancy at corners during initialization and preserves legality, capture resolution, and inspector display. After initialization, stack creation is disabled unless a PlaySetting explicitly permits it.
Divination Mode — Dice Governance (Awakening of the Abodes), Pass, and Ptah Resolution
Principle. The die governs which class of piece must act. The governed class is displayed at the top and highlighted on the board when Governance overlay is on.
Dice mapping (default).
- 1 → King (or pawn option if enabled by rules)
- 2 → Knight
- 3 → Bishop
- 4 → Queen
- 5 → Rook/Castle
- 6 → Pawn
Operational steps.
- Roll Die. Use Roll Die in Ritual Controls.
- Select a governed piece. Non-governed pieces are blocked in strict governance.
- Stage → Commit. Choose a legal destination; commit the move to write it to the ledger.
- No legal governed moves. Use Pass to record closure. Some traditions permit rerolls; if you enable reroll, the reroll itself is recorded so replay remains auditable.
- Ptah resolution. The querent king must occupy the Ptah Square and remain there through a full deosil cycle, unchecked. The app tracks hold progress turn-by-turn and ends the session when the condition is satisfied.
Interpreting constraints. In divination, interpret:
- Die result as “which agency may speak.”
- Legal move set as “the permitted vocabulary.”
- Chosen move as “the utterance.”
- Blocked selections as “denials, limits, or veils.”
- Pass as “silence / suspension / binding / waiting.”
Gaming Mode — Competitive Play Without Breaking the Enochian Structure
Gaming mode preserves the board geometry, the queen ray, and the four-corner dynamic, but relaxes or disables divinatory governance depending on your settings. Use it for training, exploration, or competitive play while retaining Enochian structure.
- Governance toggle. You may disable dice constraints for freer play.
- Victory conditions. Depending on Ruleset, you may use king capture, checkmate criteria, alliance elimination, or Ptah even in gaming as a scenario objective.
- Study value. Gaming mode is useful for learning square systems, practicing queen-ray geometry, and training intuition about constraints.
Square Systems, Pyramids, and Attributions — How to Use the Inspector
Hover and pin. Hover a square to preview it in the Inspector. Click a square on the board to pin it for deeper reading while you continue play.
What to look at.
- Lesser Angle: which corner-domain the square belongs to.
- System (Aries/Cancer): alternating-square membership; use it to judge cross-currents and “channels.”
- Attributions: sign/element/tarot/geomancy assignments from the active BoardProfile.
- Pyramid faces: the square’s internal elemental composition (used for deeper interpretation when your profile provides it).
- Occupancy and stack: which agencies are present; stacked pieces represent layered forces.
- Threats: lines of force and “coverage” are shown when Threat overlay is enabled.
Ptah square reading. When choosing a Ptah square in the wizard, examine:
- its system (Aries/Cancer),
- its elemental/pyramidal composition,
- which opposing lines of force can reach it under queen-ray geometry,
- and what defensive resources the querent/allies possess under dice governance.
Replay, Integrity, and Determinism — How to Trust (and Audit) a Session
Event-sourced ledger. Every meaningful action is recorded as an event. Events are chained by SHA-256 hashes so that any tampering is detectable.
Replay tab. Use Replay to step through the session, scrub the timeline, and verify that:
- the hash chain is intact,
- dice rolls regenerate deterministically from the stored seed and roll indices,
- legal move validation matches the recorded move, and
- derived consequences (capture/promotion/check/ptah-hold) match recomputation.
Exports. Export Session JSON for archiving; export Report HTML for printing to PDF; export PNG snapshots for journaling.
Worked Divination Workflow — A Best-Practice Ritual Pattern
- Define the question (single focus; time-bounded if possible).
- Select board by domain resonance (Air/Water/Fire/Earth).
- Choose prime and querent corners; select an opening (Play Setting).
- Select Ptah square deliberately: choose a square whose attributions match the “heart” of the question, and whose system geometry makes sense for the kind of difficulty/support expected.
- Begin deosil play. Treat each die constraint as the oracle’s chosen “speaker.”
- Journal at each turn: die, governed agency, staged options, chosen move, and a one-sentence interpretive note.
- When blocked, pass rather than forcing. Record it as an oracle output.
- Resolve at Ptah. When the querent king holds Ptah through a full cycle unchecked, close the session and write the concluding interpretation.
- Export the report and session JSON for later review.
